THE 2012 HONDA CIVIC SI COUPE REVIEW
Summary Review by Tess: Just Not Enough
Redesigned for the 2012 model year, the 2012 Honda Civic Si Coupe is a nice looking, though somewhat sedate, model in the Honda lineup. This exterior eye appeal, however, can’t mask the fact that the coupe provides less-than-inspiring performance and a dated interior design. Upgrades to the engine should remedy at least a portion of the first problem, but it may be a case of too little, too late as the Civic continues to lag behind its competitors in terms of interior refinement and finesse.
Under the hood
The 2012 Honda Civic Si Coupe is powered by an all-new 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine that is capable of 201 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque, a significant upgrade over the previous model. This new engine can go from 0 to 60 in just under seven seconds. Available only in a six-speed manual transmission, the front-wheel drive Civic Si manages 22 miles per gallon in the city and 31 on the highway, respectable figures for this automotive class. Safety features include four-wheel antilock disc brakes, stability and traction controls, and a full range of air bags for driver and passengers.
Inside the cabin
Hard surfaces and cheap materials reduce the appeal of the interior space of the 2012 Honda Civic Si. A seven-speaker CD stereo system provides audio entertainment. Other standard features include cruise control, power accessories, fog lights, an advanced air conditioning system with filtration capability and an external temperature display. Options include leather upholstery, heated front seats, heated mirrors, an upgraded stereo system, and a navigation system featuring real-time traffic information.
On the road
The 2012 Honda Civic Si Coupe delivers enough power to please drivers who may have been disappointed in the previous iterations of this peppy little performer. Smooth handling and steering contribute to the driving experience and ensure that this economy coupe performs admirably in city driving as well as on the highway. Overall, the improved engine delivers on its promise of increased power and should boost the appeal of this sleek compact coupe.
An upgraded engine and other minor tweaks have made the 2012 Honda Civic Si Coupe a more appealing choice for buyers, but dated interior choices and numerous competitors in the class will limit the popularity and sales of this compact economy car.
