THE 2012 MITSUBISHI LANCER REVIEW

Summary Review by Tess: Improved but Still Outclassed

With a few added surprises for the new model year, the 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer sedan has finally received a long-awaited update. The changes may be too little, too late for this economy sedan, however, as competitors have already achieved better gas mileage, improved interior styling, and solid driving performance. For buyers who want aggressive exterior styling paired with sedate performance, however, the Lancer continues to deliver an acceptable package of features and a comfortable ride for driver and passengers.

Under the hood
Buyers can choose among three engines for the 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer sedan. The base model 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine produces 148 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque, managing a respectable 25/34 mpg. Drivers can opt for the midrange 2.4-liter DOHC four-cylinder and get additional power with its 168 horsepower and 167 lb-ft of torque. Both the base and mid-range engines feature a five-speed manual or continuously variable-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.

Finally, the top of the line in terms of power is the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine available only on the Ralliart trim level. This powerhouse engine delivers 237 horsepower and 253 lb-ft of torque to provide superior performance for this economy sedan. All-wheel drive is standard on the Ralliart and is paired with a six-speed shiftable automatic transmission. Antilock brakes and stability controls are standard on all models of the Mitsubishi Lancer sedan.

Inside the cabin
Available in five trim levels, the 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer offers minimal legroom in the back seat, but provides an acceptable level of comfort. Standard features, however, are sparse. The base model is equipped with power windows, locks and mirrors, and a CD stereo – but lacks air conditioning. This is remedied on the SE trim level, which also offers cruise control, somewhat nicer cloth upholstery, and keyless entry. Options include a rear spoiler, Bluetooth capability, a rearview parking camera, and an upgraded stereo system.

On the road
Buyers should avoid the underpowered base model engine, but either of the other two more powerful engine choices will perform well in normal driving conditions. The Lancer is comfortable enough for most; road noise may be an issue at higher speeds.

Conclusions
While significant improvements have made the 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer sedan more viable for some buyers, more is required to allow it to compete effectively with the outstanding entries in this crowded compact car segment.
