THE 2013 ACURA ILX HYBRID REVIEW

Summary Review by Tess: A Disappointing First From Acura

All new for 2013, the Acura ILX Hybrid is an entry-level luxury hybrid sedan. Sleek and stylish, this compact sedan represents Acura’s first foray into the competitive hybrid marketplace. The resulting vehicle is an interesting combination of good fuel economy, luxurious standard features, and adequate performance that may appeal to commuters and buyers looking for family transportation. However, the steep price tag and serious competition in the entry-level luxury sedan segment may dampen the enthusiasm of buyers.

Under the hood
The 2013 Acura ILX Hybrid is powered by an advanced hybrid engine that combines the power of a 1.5-liter single overhead cam four-cylinder gas engine with the exclusive Integrated Motor Assist electric motor system. This electric motor system continuously converts the energy from braking into added power for recharging the lithium-ion batteries. Together, the gas engine and electric motor deliver 111 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque. (See annual fuel costs with the 2013 Acura ILX Hybrid). A continuously variable-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive come with the ILX Hybrid. Fuel economy for the Acura ILX Hybrid is good at 39 miles to the gallon in the city and 38 miles to the gallon on the highway. Safety features include four-wheel antilock brake systems, dual side-mounted air bags for the front seat, daytime running lights, and a whiplash protection system.

Inside the cabin
The Acura ILX Hybrid is available in one trim level, but buyers can opt for a number of packages and other optional features to customize the driving experience. Dual-zone climate control, power locks, windows and mirrors, keyless entry and startup, sunroof, and a basic CD sound system with auxiliary, USB, iPod, and Bluetooth interfaces are standard equipment on the 2013 Acura ILX Hybrid sedan. The optional Technology Package includes heated front seats, leather seating, rearview camera, navigation system, and an advanced surround-sound stereo system.

On the road
While the 2013 Acura ILX Hybrid sedan is unlikely to break any performance records, it delivers a surprisingly smooth and refined ride for drivers. Cabin noise is minimal, but the Acura ILX lacks some of the stylish interior touches and high-end materials that define a classic entry-level luxury sedan.

Conclusions
While the Acura ILX Hybrid does manage to deliver reasonable performance and a solid array of standard and optional features, it lacks the overall finesse and quality materials that characterize a true luxury sedan. Competitors cost less and offer better fuel economy and more luxurious features, making the Acura ILX a hard sell in today’s automotive marketplace.
