THE 2013 BMW X5 REVIEW
Summary Review by Tess: Continuing a Tradition of Excellence
The 2013 BMW X5 returns with only minor changes for the new model year. This luxury crossover SUV provides plenty of power behind the wheel but may be overpriced for some buyers. Nonetheless, the BMW X5 delivers the luxurious features buyers want and BMW’s usual outstanding performance on the road, ensuring that it will continue to win its fair share of the luxury SUV market.
Under the hood
Four powerful engines are available for buyers of the 2013 BMW X5, which features all-wheel drive on all models. The base 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine produces 300 horsepower and manages 23 miles to the gallon in highway driving. Buyers can upgrade to the 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 that delivers 400 horsepower, 450 lb-ft of torque, and 20 miles to the gallon on the highway. Both of these engines are paired with an eight-speed shiftable automatic transmission. The high performance BMW X5 M ups the ante even more with a 555 horsepower 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that can go from 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds, an exceptional time for just about any automotive class. Finally, the fuel-efficient turbodiesel engine is capable of 265 horsepower, 425 lb-ft of torque, and a healthy 26 miles to the gallon in highway driving.
Inside the cabin
The 2013 BMW X5 normally seats five but can manage up to seven with optional third-row bench seating. Standard equipment includes dual-zone climate control, cruise control, power-adjustable front seats, power accessories, fog lights, and a CD sound system with Bluetooth and iPod interface capability. A sunroof, navigation system, full leather upholstery, and an upgraded stereo system are available as options.

On the road
While from the outside the 2013 BMW X5 looks like a typical luxury crossover, the superior power and handling of the X5 will soon convince drivers otherwise. The elite and expensive X5 M is obviously the most powerful choice, but most buyers will find any of the vehicles in the X5 lineup well-suited to their everyday driving needs.
Conclusions
The 2013 BMW X5 lineup continues to impress and delivers some of the most exciting driving experiences available. However, the high price of this performance may cause some buyers to look elsewhere for their driving thrills.
