THE 2013 KIA OPTIMA TURBO REVIEW

Summary Review by Tess: Outstanding Performance and Practicality

The 2013 Kia Optima Turbo sedan provides plenty of power under the hood while retaining its fuel efficient credentials. Long regarded as the low price leader in the automotive marketplace, Kia has stretched its repertoire in recent years with the addition of some serious performance and luxury to the top end of its lineup. Its powerful engine is designed to appeal to performance-loving drivers who still need the functionality and fuel economy of a sedate family sedan.

Under the hood
The Kia Optima Turbo engine is available only on the SX and SXL trim levels of this sleek four-door sedan. The 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine produces 274 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, significantly more than its closest competitors. This power allows the Kia Optima Turbo sedan to zoom from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 6.5 seconds, an outstanding time for this automotive segment. Front-wheel drive is standard on both the SX and SXL trim levels and is paired with a six-speed Sportmatic shiftable automatic transmission with overdrive. Fuel economy is above average at 22 miles to the gallon in the city and 34 on the highway. (See estimated annual fuel costs with the Optima Turbo). Safety features include antilock disc braking and stability controls; a rearview backing and parking camera is optional for the 2013 Kia Optima Turbo models.

Inside the cabin
Both the Optima SX and the SXL trim levels are nicely equipped with a wide range of standard equipment including a dual-zone climate control system, fog lights, power mirrors, locks and windows, cruise control, power-adjustable front seats, and a CD stereo with iPod, Bluetooth, and USB interfaces. Options include a navigation system, sunroof, heated seats, an Infinity HD radio sound system, and leather upholstery.

On the road
The 2013 Kia Optima Turbo sedan offers solid power behind the wheel, making it a natural choice for drivers tired of the same basic family transport vehicles. The Optima’s steering and handling may lack the responsiveness to go with that performance. The outstanding fuel economy and quiet interior of the Kia Optima Turbo may make up for these shortcomings, especially for drivers looking for something extra in a family-sized sedan.

Conclusions
The exceptional performance and comfort of the Kia Optima Turbo sedan make it an outstanding all-around choice for drivers in the market for a new family vehicle. Budget-minded buyers will appreciate the superior fuel economy and extensive list of included features that make this one of the best buys in the entry-level family sedan segment of the automotive marketplace.
