THE 2014 FORD MUSTANG GT COUPE REVIEW
Summary Review by Josh: Continuing On for 2014
The retro styling and muscular drive feel of the 2014 Mustang GT Coupe pays homage to a legacy that began half a century ago. Although the legendary pony car is slated for a major design overhaul next year, the current edition leaves nothing on the table. In addition to last year’s mid-season upgrades, such as the HD headlamps, LED taillights, and restyled front end, the Mustang comes with a new trim package and a revised instrument panel. As usual, the 2014 Mustang provides the value and rear-wheel drive performance that has distinguished the venerable model for decades.
Power and Performance
The GT has a V8 DOHC 5.0L engine that produces 420 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. The power can be channeled through the standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed automatic. The stick-shift version goes from the starting gate to 60 miles per hour in less than five seconds. The coupe has an EPA estimated fuel economy rating of 15 mpg city/26 mpg highway. While the automatic transmission increases city mileage to 18 mpg, the highway rating drops to 25 mpg. Standard safety features include stability and traction control, anti-lock brakes as well as front and side impact airbags.
Features and Highlights
The entry-level GT has a full range of power accessories, a large three-spoke steering wheel, and a display of vintage style gauges. Other features include 18-inch aluminum wheels, rear spoiler, and an AM/FM/CD stereo with AUX input. Premium packages replace the basic plastic trim with chrome and silver. Other premium features include a display panel-mounted, 4.2-inch LCD screen for accessing Track Apps, and an eight-speaker sound system with satellite radio as well as leather upholstery, 19-inch wheels and Bluetooth connectivity. A glass sunroof, navigation system, and rearview camera are available options. The California Special Package adds interior accents and exterior modifications, such as a lower fascia with fog lamps, a pedestal deck lid spoiler, and body colored side scoops.
The Mustang GT handles curves respectably well especially when equipped with the optional Track Pack that includes Brembo brakes and an aggressively tuned suspension. Drivers can automatically adjust the vehicle’s responsiveness with the selectable electronic power assist steering. This feature alters the steering effort required and improves fuel efficiency. While the trunk provides 13.2 cubic feet, the rear seat is small and may be uncomfortable for passengers during an extended trip.
