THE 2014 MERCEDES-BENZ CLS550 REVIEW
Summary Review by Josh: Beauty Meets Power
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLS550 continues to blur the distinction between body styles. While the luxurious sedan has four doors, it has classic coupe features like an elongated hood and a low-sloped roof. The lavish interior is outfitted with amenities and details that drivers should expect from a vehicle at this price point. With a sticker price starting at $72,100, owning this sedan places drivers in an elite club.
Power and Performance
This CLS550 is powered by a 4.6-liter, 402-horsepower twin-turbo V8 that generates 443 lb-ft of torque. When teamed with the standard seven-speed automatic transmission, the rear-wheel drive sedan hits 60 mph from zero in under five seconds. This powertrain combination receives an EPA estimated fuel economy rating of 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. The 21.1-gallon fuel tank provides an estimated highway cruising range of 527.5 miles. The CLS550 is equipped with an adjustable air suspension. A limited slip rear differential is an available option.
Features and Highlights
The interior has an impressive ergonomic design and fine detailing, such as intricate stitching and hand-polished Black Ash or Burl Walnut wood trim. Standard features include 14-way power seats with three-position memory and a 14-speaker, 610-watt Harmon/Kardon sound system with HD AM/FM radio receiver as well as a six-disc DVD/CD changer. The Cockpit Management and Data system has a 7-inch screen and a cloud-based GPS navigation system. Options include iPod interface, ventilated front seats, an electric trunk lid closer, and split-folding rear seats.

The CLS550 sedan has 10 strategically positioned airbags, Attention Assist driver drowsiness monitor, daytime LED running lights and taillights as well as bi-xenon headlights. Safety options include a rear view camera, Active Lane Keeping Assist, the advanced parking assist system Parktronic, and Night View Assist with Pedestrian Detection.
The CLS50 has ample power for passing on the highway. Along with its many safety features, there is also an added sense of security that comes from the 4Matic all-wheel drive system, which provides optimal torque to every wheel in every road condition. There is minimal road or wind noise. While the CLS550 has four doors, there is only room for two rear passengers due to the center console. Although the low-sloping roof reduces headroom, the design is an improvement over previous models.
