Despite their clear benefits in fuel economy, many consumers are reluctant to purchase new hybrids because of their price premium over traditionally-powered cars. Buying used is a solution, and with more hybrid cars flooding the market, consumers have a myriad of choices when it comes to purchasing a used hybrid.

Hybrid technology has expanded in the U.S. for the past decade, pioneered by the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius. Dozens more options exist today for buyers, making the process more complicated than ever. There are currently over 415,000 used hybrids on the market today, according to CNW Marketing Research.

It’s not always easy selecting a used hybrid. When taking out a prospective hybrid for a test drive, it is often difficult to spot obvious problems with the drivetrain as the telltale red flags are different than the ones in gas-powered cars. Since hybrids drive quietly, buyers unfamiliar with hybrid systems may not pick up on the noises that signal severe maintenance problems. For these reasons, it is important to have the car inspected by a mechanic that has special knowledge of hybrid systems. Many automakers, including Toyota and Honda, also offer certified used programs for their hybrid vehicles, which must pass a 150+-point inspection before being sold to consumers. Buyers will also want to look at the car’s service record to determine if it is safe to buy.

How long do hybrids last compared to traditional cars? Most automakers claim 10 years. Toyota and Ford offer 8 year/100,000 mile warranties on hybrid components, transferrable to used car customers. Ten states, including California and New York, have adopted a zero-emissions vehicle mandate that expands warranty coverage for hybrids to 10 years/150,000 miles.

Drivers who anticipate they will use their hybrid for longer may be worried about the costs of replacing an old battery. These vary widely, from just $2,200 for a 2004-2009 Prius battery to $4,900 for an Altima Hybrid battery, reports Edmunds.com. Consumers may also be able to recoup some of the money by recycling their old battery. Replacements, however, are rare as hybrids have proved their reliability for the long run. In 2011, Consumer Reports tested a 215,000 mile 2003 Prius and found that its performance decreased only slightly and fuel economy kept consistent with its original EPA numbers.

Many used hybrid buyers will opt for the Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry Hybrid, Toyota Highlander Hybrid, Ford Escape Hybrid, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Nissan Altima Hybrid, Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid, or Honda Civic Hybrid. Popular new hybrids include the Ford Fusion Hybrid, Ford C-Max, and Toyota Prius c. Experts from Edmunds and Kelley Blue Book, however, have advised consumers to stay away from purchasing 2006-2008 Honda Civic Hybrids because of poor reliability. Honda told owners that the hybrid batteries “may deteriorate and eventually fail.” Many owners have also claimed fuel economy hasn’t lived up to its promises as the vehicle gets older.

Many popular small SUVs fail to provide adequate protection in small overlap frontal collisions, according to recent data by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Only two small SUV models passed the agency’s newest crash test.

The IIHS evaluated the performance of 13 small SUVs in the new small overlap frontal crash test. This type of collision, which involves approximately 25 percent of the vehicle’s front end, typically occurs when a driver strikes a pole, tree, or the corner of another vehicle. During these accidents, the impact point misses the primary structural components that are designed to absorb and redistribute the force of the crash. Small overlap collisions account for almost 25 percent of all accidents that result in a fatality or serious bodily injury.

Introduced last year, the IIHS test is more stringent than that required by the federal government. The organization added the small overlap test to simulate a common scenario on the road and encourage automakers to increase the crash resistance of their vehicle lineups. Automakers usually redesign their vehicles to achieve the organization’s safety ratings because the independent tests are an important factor for consumers who are buying new cars.

The 2014 Subaru Forester was the only vehicle to receive the organization’s top rating of “Good” on the new test. The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport was rated as “Acceptable,” the second highest rating. Both vehicles were awarded the company’s highly prized “Top Safety Pick+” designation because of their top-tier performance in other side, rear, rollover, and other types of front-end crashes. Vehicles performing poorly on the new small overlap test included some of the best-selling 2013 models in this sector. The Ford Escape, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Patriot, and Kia Sportage received the lowest possible rating of “Poor” on this test. Other models, including the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, Jeep Wrangler, BMW X1, Volkswagen Tiguan, and Nissan Rogue scored “Marginal.” The IIHS did not evaluate Toyota’s popular RAV-4 because the automaker asked the organization to wait until the company incorporated some new design changes.

Small SUVs are one of the fastest-growing segments in the U.S. automotive market. Accounting for 2.5 million units each year, small SUV sales have increased 50 percent since 2005. American consumers love the vehicles for their versatility, performance, styling, and comfort.

But small SUVs aren’t alone. A variety of luxury small cars also performed poorly. In small overlap tests conducted last year, eight of 11 luxury cars failed.

Full Review by Andy: Waffling Between a Win and a Whiff

Want a souped-up hot hatch? There’s a Subaru WRX for that. Want a zippy, pleasant roadster? There’s a Mazda Miata for that. Stuck in the middle? Cannot decide? Then consider the 2013 Honda Civic Si.

The outgoing Si, which was recently introduced in 2012, succeeded in much the same way as a Michael Bay Hollywood blockbuster. Honda sold gobs of them to the admiring masses, but professionals turned up their noses at the redesigned Civic. Distilled, boring, and disappointing, they called it. So Honda, after collecting check after check from the public, promised the pundits that it would atone for its heinous sins.

Thicker bushings, stiffer dampers, softer trimmings, and one year later, the Civic Si returns. Many hoped for a fire-breathing, naturally-aspirated jewel of a track star. Well, one out of three is not too bad.

In contrast to the high-revving, torque-less engine of the eighth-generation Si, the new car uses a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a moderately less insane 7,100-rpm redline. The naturally-aspirated engine churns out 210 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque. A single transmission is available: a six-speed manual, just like God and Honda intended. The slick-shifting gearbox can swap cogs quicker than Fred Astaire can dance a two-step, and with more precision, too. Careful engine tuning delivers plenty of torque in the low range, something the old Si lacked.

Yet some would rather have the old Si. Its engine, though squealing and stringy, delivered more grins per liter than its competitors, even those with more horsepower per liter. Meanwhile, the new engine and transmission exchange personality for power. Yet many say that the Civic Si lacks both. Two hundred horsepower is but small peanuts in a world rife with turbochargers, direct-injection, and Detroit. The car’s portly 3,000-lb curb weight doesn’t help matters.

But fun is fun is fun, especially when it comes with a front limited-slip differential. Honda’s efforts over the past year have not gone unnoticed. The steering ratio is seven percent quicker, and most every component is thicker: the windshield, the sound insulation, the bushings, the stabilizer bars, etc. As a result, the little car is a bucket of thrills in either sedan or coupe guise. It scoots to 60 mph in approximately 6.3 seconds (7.0 seconds if carrying one’s mother-in-law) and onward to a top speed of 136 mph. Top track speed is reached in sixth gear. Yet even without an overdrive gear, the Civic Si still nets up to 31 mpg. Premium unleaded gasoline is required. But generally speaking, the Civic Si gives the finger to the EPA and screeches happily to the next red light.

Honda, busy bee that it is, tinkered with more than the drivetrain as well. Whereas the old interior was often dinged for its callous plastic, banal colors, and all-around mediocrity, the new interior wins a few converts. Fresh synthetic upholstery swathes the dashboard, with a look and feel reminiscent of tanned cowhide. Extra sound insulation pads the doors and ceiling, cutting out the omniscient Honda drone. A stiffer structure prevents creaks and wiggles when cutting sharp corners and rolling over potholes, even those Chicago-deep. New interior color combinations debut, and yes, they match.

The Civic’s general size and shape remain the same, and well they should. The sedan is quite spacious, with room fore and aft for full-fledged adults and a trunk large enough to easily accommodate a week’s worth of groceries. The rear seats can be folded flat in a pinch for extra storage space. The coupe, on the other hand, is a bit cramped. In the rear seat is only 30.8 inches of legroom, about enough to house a runt mouse. Rear headroom is stunted as well. The coupe, however, has a much more streamlined and aggressive appearance.

(See 80+ pictures and color options for the Honda Civic Si).

The 2013 Honda Civic Si is sold in a single feature trim. Most of its interior features are shared with the base EX trim; differences include red ambient lighting and a handful of leather-wrapped knickknacks. Comfort and convenience amenities include climate control, cloth upholstery, sport front seats, and a sunroof (no rollcage). Bluetooth connectivity, a six/seven-speaker audio system and a rearview camera all come free of extra charge. Many of the systems are controlled via physicals dashboard buttons linked to a five-inch central display screen that outputs cabin information. The cockpit setup is simple, logical, and easy to learn.

Judged independently of its competitors, the 2013 Honda Civic Si is a fine automobile: sprightly, comfortable, and attractive, but anyone looking for a fire-breathing track star ought to shop the next lot.

The redesigned BMW 5 Series starts at $50,425, a $1,700 price bump from the previous model year. Arriving in dealerships this August, the 2014 BMW 5 Series receives an enhanced exterior, more technology, and a few changes under the bay.

New trapezoidal headlights and lower air intakes give the 5 Series a refreshed look for 2014. Side indicator lights are now integrated into the exterior mirrors, and xenon headlights are standard on all models. New features for the BMW 5 Series include a rear-seat entertainment system and hands-free trunk closer activated by motion under the bumper. One of the most important new features for 2014 is the upgraded iDrive infotainment system with touchpad. This system provides 3D mapping, a controller that can read characters a user writes with his or her finger, and the ability to hook up more than one phone at a time with Bluetooth.

The 2014 BMW 5 Series is priced $1,480 below the 2013 Mercedes-Benz E350, giving it an edge over one of its main competitors. The new 5 Series is undercut, however, by the Audi A6.

Under the hood, power remains the same for the base 528i model and the 300-horsepower 535i. The new 550i, equipped with a V8 engine, boosts horsepower for 2014 to a total of 445 ponies. A new diesel version is also available, providing 255 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. Further, the top-of-the-line M5 will receive an optional Competition Package that increases horsepower to 575.

Pricing for the 2014 BMW 5 Series varies from just over $50,000 to $91,825 for the M5. The 535i starts at $56,025. The diesel version is the next most expensive, costing $57,525. The ActiveHybrid 5 is priced at $62,325, and the 550i goes for $64,825. All prices include destination fees.

The BMW 535i Gran Turismo is debuting along with the 5 Series in the next few months. Cargo space has been enhanced in this model for a total of 17.7 cubic feet available. The Gran Turismo model starts at $60,925.

Consumers felt relief at the pump at the beginning of this month when prices sank to $3.50 around the nation. But just in time for Memorial Day, gas prices are creeping up again, reaching $3.62 on Monday.

Problems at several oil refineries are raising prices at gas pumps around the Midwest. Other than Hawaii, Minnesota currently has the highest gas prices in the nation, averaging $4.26 per gallon. North Dakota followed with the third highest prices at $4.19. Illinois and Nebraska came in close behind at $4.09 and $4.07 respectively. Alaska and California, which typically have the highest prices after Hawaii, averaged just above $4.00.

Iowa, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Wisconsin are also suffering from sharp price hikes at the pump. But the supply of crude oil, which is at its highest levels since the early 1930s, is clearly not a problem. Outages and extended maintenance programs have reduced output at factories in Joliet, Ill.; Whiting, Ind.; Tulsa, Okla., and Eldorado, Kansas. The refinery problems are expected to keep gas prices high for several weeks, experts say.

“While this is a regional problem, it’s definitely going to push overall prices up – no doubt about it,” Brian Milne from energy adviser Schneider Electric told USA Today.

A recent survey revealed 86 percent of drivers are cutting down on driving due to high gas prices. Many are also choosing to shop less and dine-in more often.

As Memorial Day approaches, demand for gasoline will be especially high. Supply shortages are not expected, but gas prices will likely jump once again. Find information on local, state, and national gas prices on the zAutos Gas Prices Portal.

Full Review by Andy: How to Be Cool

Just seven years ago, you were cool. Friday nights brimmed – overflowed, really – with late nights, tall drinks, and loud music at the downtown speakeasy. Your skinny jeans fit perfectly because every morning at 9:00 a.m. found you sweating on the treadmill. You even owned a pair of genuine Oakley Holbrook shades.

Then came Junior. And his sister. And her sister. And the dog. And 15 pounds. And the Nissan Quest: your last-ditch effort to convince yourself that you – family, pets, and waistline notwithstanding – are still cool.

Now, go strap in that booster seat like a boss.

* * *

The Nissan Quest minivan radiates cool, which makes this quite possibly the first sentence ever penned in the English language where “minivan” and “cool” were juxtaposed in the affirmative sense. Unlike other Nissan design head-scratchers (eg: the Cube), the Quest has matching proportions. Its presence is defined by a wraparound window that encircles the greenhouse like a dark headband, and subtle character creases on the sides and the front fascia help break up the otherwise hard lines. Some like it, some hate it, and some hate it more. If nothing else, the Quest presents an I-don’t-give-a-flying-fudgeball-what-you-think-of-me aurora, which, in its own way, is pretty cool.

What else is cool? Power. And horses. The Nissan Quest has both, mixed up in its 260-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine. The engine’s work is routed through a CVT transmission, which has no fixed gears but depends on variable gear ratios via the changing drive pulley to adjust shaft speeds. Nissan has been fooling around with CVTs for quite some time, so the Quest’s transmission is one of the best of its kind. It is smooth and quiet and achieves decent fuel economy: 19/25 mpg.

The Quest has long been known as the most fun-to-drive of all minivans in North America. After all, its maker also begot the GT-R and 370Z. It has the most accurate, most heavily weighted steering of them all – a turn-off to some female drivers, ironically – and an amenable ride quality over a variety of surfaces.

As someone who has spent time in a Nissan Rogue, Murano, Altima, and Versa, this author finds such things sound a little suspect. Nissans drive well, sure, but road noise and tire whine are usually omnipresent friends. How does the Quest manage to stifle ambient noise, which is a traditional Nissan bugaboo?

Answer: Japan. In Japan, Nissan sells a luxury MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) called the Elgrand, a type of vehicle in high demand on the other side of the world. The Quest is based on the Elgrand and benefits from its compliant ride and insulated cabin. Globalism has its perks.

Yet more than fashion separates the Quest from its rivals. Unlike minivans from Honda, Toyota, and Chrysler, which usually seat eight, the Nissan only seats seven, swapping out the usual three-person second-row bench seat for two plush, adjustable captain’s chairs. The tradeoff is more comfort for less people. In a similar vein, due to its high floor, the Quest has roughly 75 percent of the average minivan cargo capacity. With all seats down, it offers 108 cubic feet of storage space. Comparatively, the Toyota Sienna has 150 cubic feet of cargo capacity. However, all seats fold forward and flat into the floor. The Sienna may be able to stow more, but only after lugging the second-row seats into the garage after 20 minutes of back-breaking labor. In the end, the Quest is far more practical for short jaunts. If those last 42 cubic feet of space are truly all that important – well, the Quest can tow 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.

The 2013 Nissan Quest is sold in four feature trims: S, SV, SL, and LE. Although the Quest has an initial high starting price, its upper trims are competitive when matched feature-for-feature with competitors.

The S model has a cozy number of basics: cruise control, a robust stereo, keyless entry, etc.

The SV model tacks on a helluva lot: power-sliding doors, a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity, an upgraded sound system with color display and about double all that.

The SL model adds a number of convenience features such a power liftgate, heated power-adjustable front seats, one-touch folding rear seats, and much more.

The LE model is the closest thing to a Mercedes short of the thing itself. Amenities include a birds-eye camera, a Bose surround-sound audio system, a rear-seat entertainment system, and a blind-spot warning system. The DVD rear-seat entertainment system is an option on even the lowest S trim. As luxurious minivans go, only the Honda Odyssey can hold a candle to the Nissan Quest LE.

Be cool, and get the 2013 Nissan Quest.

Kia, a brand traditionally known for its economy cars, is taking a bold step by confirming the launch of a new luxury model in the U.S. Looking to secure a spot in the competitive premium car marketplace, Kia will introduce the Quoris luxury sedan in the U.S. next year.

The Quoris, which is expected to cost between $50,000 and $70,000, targets top-tier sedans such as the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The Quoris (pronounced “chorus”) is a large, rear-wheel-drive sedan with V6 and V8 engine offerings. It shares a platform with its sister car, the Hyundai Equus.

The introduction of the Quoris complements the Kia Cadenza, the brand’s entry-level luxury model costing $35,000. The Cadenza is priced higher than Hyundai’s equivalent, the Azera.

Earlier this year, it was unclear whether the Quoris would arrive stateside. The Quoris has already launched in the Middle East as well as South Korea, where it is called the K9. In overseas markets, it sold only 7,700 copies, under the 18,200 sales target set by the company for 2012.

Kia Vice Chairman Hyoung-Keun Lee told the media last year that Kia was poised to become a key competitor in the premium marketplace over the next five years. He said the company will introduce premium styling, advanced technology, and more efficient 10-speed transmissions for its cars of the future.

Kia is launching seven all-new or redesigned models in the U.S. this year, including the Forte SX and the new Soul.

Range anxiety and poor charging infrastructure have greatly hindered the growth of electric vehicles in the U.S., but according to a new study, this problem could be alleviated by 2020. The number of electric vehicle charging stations is set to increase tenfold by the end of the decade.

There will be an estimated 10.7 million charging stations around the world by 2020, a dramatic increase from just 135,000 in 2011. According to the data by IMS Research, the growth will be led by U.S., China, Japan, and Germany.

“While volumes may not reach the levels imagined in the hype of 2009, it is clear that there needs to be charging infrastructure in place to support this change in mobility,” said Alastair Hayfield, associate director at IMS Research and the author of the report, in a recent statement.

The U.S. has embraced EV technology, with over 5,894 public charging stations available. Plug-in vehicles currently make up 0.5 percent of the total auto market in the U.S. The Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf have traditionally been the top-selling plug-in cars in the U.S. The new Tesla Model S, which received top scores from Consumer Reports, has surpassed sales of these two plug-ins so far this year, however.

Most electric vehicles come with a range of around 100 miles, which limits a driver’s capacity to travel on long trips without recharging. The Tesla Model S, however, boasts a range of nearly 300 miles, albeit a huge price premium over most models. Tesla has also been a major force in strengthening the EV infrastructure, rolling out Supercharger stations that can recharge a car halfway in just 30 minutes. Around 100 of these stations are expected to be ready by 2015.

Chrysler reached a milestone last week when a special Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition model rolled off the assembly line in Toledo, Ohio. The black JK brought the number of Wranglers produced to a cool million. The Wrangler JK was designed as a recreational vehicle after the World War II all-terrain military vehicle first built in 1941 and, like all Jeeps, is known for its off-road capabilities.

According to Mauro Pino, vice president of the Chrysler Group who was given the honor of driving the four-wheel-drive vehicle off the line, all Jeep Wranglers are now made in the U.S. at the eight-year-old Toledo plant. The vehicle is sold in 120 countries.

The vehicles can be bought new or used at a dealership, but the latest trend is for customers to build their own virtual 2013 Jeep Wrangler online and have it custom made to their specifications at the Toledo factory. Model options for 2013 include the Sport, Sport S, Sahara, Freedom Edition, Rubicon, Moab Edition, and the Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition.

Options vary from model to model and include features such as tinted glass, cloth seats, hard or soft top, tubular side steps, raised clearance, fog lamps, grab handles, door pulls, and rock rails. Special tires and other upgrades are available for the owner who wants to combine street driving with off-road adventures. The price ranges from $22,295 for the 2013 Sport to $36,095 for the Rubicon model. Jeep also introduced a new line of performance accessories last year that allows owners to customize these vehicles to their content with more than 300 after-market options.

The Wrangler is not known for its fuel mileage or stellar safety features due to its distinctive boxy shape and removable soft top. It has won its share of awards, however, for value, design, and handling capabilities. Recent distinctions include the Hottest 4×4 by Specialty Equipment Market Association, the Kelley Blue Book Top 10 Best Resale Value Award, and the distinction of Four Wheeler of the Year by Four Wheeler magazine.

According to Chrysler Group LLC, the Wrangler assembly plant currently employs 600 United Auto Workers union members. The total Toledo assembly complex employs more than 2,000 workers on the 312-acre site. The complex has several buildings and primarily manufactures the Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited. The Toledo plant is also earmarked to start producing the new 2014 Jeep Cherokee.

Tesla’s stock value has doubled in the past month to more than $90 a share. The company, which rapidly evolved from an EV startup to a well-recognized profitable company, is now valued at $10.6 billion. This valuation puts it at a higher than established Italian automaker Fiat, which is worth less than $8 billion.

Because of the improvement, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company would raise $830 million in new stock and debt offerings. Tesla will in turn use this money to repay off loans due to the U.S. Department of Energy. Musk also announced that he would purchase $100 million shares himself, pushing stock prices up even further.

The rising value of Tesla comes on the heels of a Consumer Reports evaluation, which scored the Model S a rare 99 out of 100 in testing. Tesla also announced it entered profitability during the first quarter, in which it sold over 4,700 sedans, exceeding sales of the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf. The Model S remains the beacon of hope for the electric vehicle revolution, as other EV companies including Fisker, Coda, and Aptera have fizzled out.

Despite its success, some analysts say the company’s share price is another bubble in the tech industry. It is selling for about 600 times its estimated earnings for 2013. Much of Tesla’s profits have come from selling ZEV credits, which help automakers comply with clean car regulations for the state of California. Tesla would have reported an overall loss in the first quarter had it not sold $68 million of these credits.

Tesla has taken its time growing, reaching a profit after ten years in the EV business. Musk plans on rolling out the Model X SUV in 2014. A low-priced model costing around $30,000 is also in the works for the future.
