The 2012 Mazda Mazda6 Review

Summary Review by Tess: A Pain at the Pump

The entry level Mazda6 is one of the roomiest and most visually appealing family-sized sedans on the road at a price that most families can afford. Sleek, aerodynamic lines and a choice of engines make the Mazda6 a versatile choice, but poor fuel economy will reduce its appeal for budget-minded buyers and for those looking for a green-friendly vehicle in this automotive segment.

Under the hood
The 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder base engine is standard on the i Sport and i Touring trim levels and delivers 170 horses and 167 pound-feet of torque, while the s Touring series is powered by a 3.7-liter V-6 engine with 272 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. Depending on the trim level, buyers can choose between a six-speed manual, five-speed shiftable automatic, and an advanced six-speed automatic transmission. All trim levels are available with front-wheel drive only. Fuel economy is below average at 21 miles to the gallon for the four-cylinder engine and 18 miles to the gallon for the larger engine. Safety features for the 2012 Mazda6 include four-wheel antilock brakes, air bags, and stability and traction control.

Inside the cabin
The base trim level of the 2012 Mazda6 arrives well-equipped with air conditioning, power mirrors, windows and door locks, cruise control, keyless entry, and a base-level six-speaker CD stereo system with auxiliary hookups. Upper trim levels offer additional features that can be purchased as options for the lower trim levels; these features include a sunroof, rearview camera, keyless remote ignition and entry, six-CD changer stereo system, and a dual-zone automatic climate control system.

On the road
The 2012 Mazda6 offers responsive steering and handling and enough power to take on the highway or the uphill climb with confidence. Opting for the 3.7-liter V-6 will provide a higher degree of performance with not much loss in fuel economy, but most drivers can manage quite nicely with the four-cylinder base engine.

Conclusions
There’s a lot to love about the 2012 Mazda6 including a low sticker price, plenty of passenger room and cargo space, and solid performance in the city and on the highway. However, the poor gas mileage may turn off drivers interested in economizing at the pump as well as at the dealership.

The highly-anticipated 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1, which arrives this spring, will come with a faster gear shift response time in manual mode.

General Motors announced that its improved TapShift technology will please car enthusiasts as it combines the thrill and satisfaction of stick-shift driving with the ease of an automatic transmission. The technology was originally introduced to allow drivers the control of up- and down-shifts with paddle shifters. But the TapShift technology is now back and better than ever for 2012. This year, GM engineers used a new software algorithm that allows for 60 percent improved tap response time, which will provide better performance and speed on the roadway.

“The faster you can get to the next gear, the better, and from the sound of it, the ZL1 automatic’s performance is going to make paddle shifting more exhilarating and satisfying for drivers of all skill sets,” said Eric Fedewa, director of Global Powertrain Forecasting at IHS Automotive, in a recent press release. “We’re seeing a trend toward more manual-mode-capable, fun-to-drive automatic transmissions across all vehicle segments, and GM’s technology is leading the pack.”

While it may be instinctual for Camaro enthusiasts to opt for the manual transmission, consumers may want to take a second look at the automatic version for 2012. Incredibly, the new Camaro ZL1 goes from 0 to 60 mph faster with the automatic transmission than with the manual. The ZL1’s 0 to 60 time with the automatic is 3.8 seconds, a tenth of a second faster than the classic manual’s time.

The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is the most powerful production Camaro built to date. It is powered by a 6.2-liter engine which produces 580 horsepower and 556 lb-ft of torque. The legendary Camaro ZL1 can reach a top speed of 184 mph.

The new Camaro ZL1 Coupe will go on sale this spring as a 2012 model. Those who are craving the new convertible version will have to wait until the summer, when it will be introduced as a 2013 model.

The alliance will be focused on sharing vehicles and parts, which will help reduce production costs on both sides. Trading company stakes is not currently a part of the discussions.

Word of the strategic partnership comes after a difficult year for both GM and Peugeot Citroen in the European market. GM recently reported a $747 million loss in the region during 2011, and the company has loss $15.6 billion there since 1999. Analysts predict that GM will likely have to spend as much as $1 billion in reviving its European division, including the Opel and Vauxhall brands. Meanwhile, the Paris-based Peugeot Citroen suffered $578 million in losses last year, reports USA Today. Peugeot Citroen is the second largest automaker in Europe after Volkswagen but has been struggling to make a profit in the auto sector due to difficult economic conditions in the region.

French newspaper La Tribune reported that GM may help Citroen expand in China and Brazil. GM could also help the French car manufacturer make its comeback to the US after a 20-year absence in the market.

However, both GM and Peugeot Citroen have not yet confirmed the reported alliance. GM has not confirmed the talks with the French automaker. In response to the reports, Peugeot Citroen issued a statement.

“In the context of its globalization strategy and improving its operational performance, PSA Peugeot Citroen looks at potential cooperations and alliances,” it read. “There can be no certainty at this stage that these discussions will result in any agreement.”

The all-new Maserati GranTurismo Sport is the new edition to the lineup, replacing the GranTurismo S model. The new Sport comes equipped with a muscular 4.7-liter V8 engine, pumping out 27 more horsepower than its predecessor. It provides even more power than the premium, top-of-the-line GranTurismo MC. The 2013 GranTurismo Sport is now capable of 460 horsepower and can zoom to 62 mph in under five seconds. Details on whether the latest GranTurismo will continue with the six-speed automated manual have not yet been released.

The GranTurismo Sport will receive a new front fascia with larger air apertures on each side for better cooling of the brakes and engine. Also framing the front of the car are new LED daytime running lamps. The rear of the GranTurismo Sport gets darker, more aggressive taillights. On the inside, Maserati redesigned the front and back seats as well as the steering wheel to enhance the sportiness of the interior.

Maserati introduced the GranTurismo in 2008 and debuted the faster, sportier GranTurismo S the following year. It is known in the automotive world for combining the luxury of a grand touring vehicle with exceptional speed and agility.

Another high-performance car that may try to steal the show from the GranTurismo Sport is an offering by fellow Italian automaker Ferrari. During the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, Ferrari will introduce a new V12 that could carry as much as 700 horsepower, reports The New York Daily News.

Nevada has become the first state to approve legislation authorizing the use of self-driving vehicles on its roads. Now that the law is finalized, the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles is working on licensing procedures for companies that want to test drive the cars throughout the state.

Each self-driving vehicle on the road for testing will receive a special red license plate, said the Nevada DMV in a recent press release. As the technology advances and is ready for use by the general public, autonomous vehicles will be distinguished by special green license plates.

Not long ago, self-driving vehicle technology was placed alongside other ridiculous concepts like hover cars and personal robots. But the widespread use of autonomous vehicles may become a reality in the near future. The self-driving cars could arrive as early as 2020, predicts Alan Taub, GM’s Vice President of Research and Development. The world’s largest automaker is currently working on the EN-V, an electric pod with autonomous driving capabilities, as well as a self-driving Chevrolet Tahoe.

BMW has also recently developed autonomous driving technology with its ConnectedDrive Connect system. The system implements radar, ultrasonics, cameras, and laser scanners to monitor traffic conditions and self-drive accordingly. BMW has predicted that the technology will be available in 10 to 15 years.

Perhaps the king of automated driving technology is Google, which has self-driving prototypes that have logged over 160,000 miles of testing. Google’s self-driving research and development project officially launched in 2010, resulting in not a single collision with its autonomous vehicles. According to The Detroit Bureau, Google was partly responsible for pushing the new law.

The 2012 Honda Insight Review

Summary Review by Tess: Hybrid Frugality, but a Bumpy Ride

One of the most fuel efficient vehicles on the road, the 2012 Honda Insight Hatchback is a surprisingly affordable hybrid vehicle with aerodynamically designed exterior lines and four-door convenience. Available in three trim levels, the Honda Insight Hatchback lacks some of the luxury features of its competitors in this automotive class and fails to deliver the rear-seat room taller passengers require for comfort. For budget-minded families with small children, however, the Honda Insight is a practical and low-cost choice in the entry-level hybrid field.

Under the hood
The 2012 Honda Insight Hatchback features a 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine that, on its own, produces 88 horsepower and 88 pound-feet of torque. It is mated with an electric motor powered by nickel-metal hydride batteries that adds 13 horsepower and 58 pound-feet of torque. Due to varying power peaks, the maximum output comes out to 98 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque. Front wheel drive is standard, and the Honda Insight features a continuously variable-speed automatic transmission. The Insight offers exceptional fuel economy at 41 miles to the gallon in the city and 44 on the highway. Safety equipment includes the ubiquitous four wheel antilock brakes and stability and traction control systems. A rearview camera for parking and backing is available as an option.

Inside the cabin
The back seat of the 2012 Honda Insight Hatchback is cramped by most adult standards, but otherwise the interior of the Insight is comfortable and reasonably well-appointed. The base trim level is rather spartan in comparison to the features available on the Insight’s direct competition; standard features include automatic climate control, power windows, mirrors and locks, cruise control, and a sub-par two-speaker CD sound system. Upper trim levels offer cruise control, an upgraded stereo system with USB, iPod and Bluetooth hookups, and an advanced navigation system.

On the road
While fast starts and swift acceleration is not the strong suit of any hybrid, the 2012 Honda Insight Hatchback offers responsive steering and handling and manages to deliver adequate performance for most drivers. The suspension is iffy with a great deal of bouncing on uneven surfaces, and the ride quality can suffer due to poor sound insulation in the passenger cabin.

Conclusions
While the 2012 Honda Insight Hatchback is one of the most inexpensive hybrids on the market and offers outstanding gas mileage, it cannot compete in terms of luxury or comfort with its closest competitors. For young families on a budget, it may be a viable choice; most others should look at competing hybrids for a more comfortable ride.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the side curtain air bags in the vehicles may not inflate properly, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash. The propellant mixture used to inflate the air bags may not be enough to allow them to work properly.

Nissan will notify owners of the affected vehicles. Dealers will replace the faulty air bag modules free of charge under the recall, which is expected to begin Feb. 27.

Another recent recall also targeted the 2012 Nissan Versa. The recall, which affects 36,000 Versa subcompacts with automatic transmissions, was put in place in late January. Nissan explained that the transmission locks in the Versas may not work as expected and may shift out of the park position without pressure on the brakes. Models built between June 9. 2011 and Jan. 13 of this year are affected in the recall.

Starting with 2013 model year vehicles, cars sold in the US will be required to have more comprehensive fuel economy labels. The new labels will help consumers to see how a particular vehicle compares to others on the market in terms of costs, fuel economy, and environmental impact.

The new labels will list a vehicle’s fuel economy rating and compare that number to the ratings of other cars in the same segment. The stickers also tell how much consumers should expect to spend on fuel for a particular vehicle compared to the average new vehicle. The labels rate a car’s smog emissions and greenhouse gas emissions on a 10-point scale. With electric-powered vehicles, the labels also include information on the expected charging time and driving range.

According to the Wall Street Journal, some automakers have already voluntarily begun placing the new labels on 2012 model year cars. Nissan included the revised label on its all-electric Leaf while General Motors slapped the new sticker on its 2012 Chevrolet Sonic. As 2013 model year cars start arriving this month, consumers will find it even easier to compare fuel economy numbers and vehicle costs among all models for sale in the country.

The EPA, along with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, first introduced the fuel economy labels 35 years ago. The latest changes represents the biggest overhaul of the labels to date.

General Motors must spend $1 billion to revive its flailing European division, according to estimates by industry experts.

“The cost is likely to be steep and the savings not immediate,” wrote RBC Capital Markets analyst Joseph Spak in a note to investors. The firm estimates that GM will have to shell out $600 million this year and $400 million next year in restructuring expenses, reports Bloomberg.

The Detroit-based automaker recently reported a $747 million loss for Europe in 2011. GM posted a $1.95 billion loss in Europe during the previous year and has lost a total of $15.6 billion there since 1999.

According to GM CEO Dan Akerson, falling demand for its vehicles in Europe will require the automaker to adjust capacity accordingly. Bloomberg reports that revenue for GM Europe fell by over 9 percent in the fourth quarter.

The struggles in its European operations come in stark contrast to GM’s business in other areas of the world, especially in China and the US. GM recently reported its highest overall profit on record of $7.6 billion. Overall revenue increased 11 percent in 2011. GM also gained the title of the world’s best selling automaker, doling out over 9 million new vehicles to customers last year.

The 2012 Hyundai Accent Sedan Review

Full Review by Andy: Hyundai’s Fairy Tale

Once upon a time – meaning last year – the general public looked upon the Hyundai Accent with displeasure, and often, pity. The Accent competed for the dubious honor as the cheapest econobox in America, suitable only for the few confused souls who preferred new Spartan torture chambers over used yet practical vehicles. For 2012, the Accent has been born anew. It runs about three grand shy of being America’s most inexpensive vehicle, and every penny is worth it.

What Does It Look Like?
Last year’s plain style has given way to a swoopy, chiseled exterior in line with the Sonata and Elantra. Like its corporate siblings, the Hyundai’s side design lines rise from the aggressive, feline front fascia and glide up to a high beltline and arch over the rear haunches. Yet, unlike the Veloster or the funk boxes offered by its Asian competitors, the petite Accent has a voluptuous design that manages to look stylish but not immature.

Trappings & Trimmings
The Accent’s attractive tiered dashboard, sporty instrument panel, and futurist control cluster meld together to create a stylish and well-designed interior. Thankfully, the avant-garde aesthetic does not surrender function for form, and many users compliment the Accent’s simple controls and textured plastic pieces.

Packin’ a Powertrain
There are only a few things you need to know about the Accent’s new powertrain: It has more horsepower and more fuel economy. How can you lose? The 1.6-liter mill under the hood puts out 138 horsepower courtesy of direct injection, and achieves an excellent 30/40 mpg with either available transmission. The automatic achieves a combined 33 mpg while the manual receives a combined 34 mpg. The automatic gearbox is equipped with hill start assist, an Eco mode for fuel-efficient driving and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Driveline Performance
Dreaming Fast & Furious visions of green lights, scantily clad beautiful women, and screeching tires making music? Sorry to pinch your arm and disrupt the dream, but the Accent sedan is not sporty. Hyundai has not released official figures, but many drivers attest to 0 to 60 sprints in the mid-9s. Like all small cars, the Accent does have a certain amount of throw-about, carefree fun to it, but it is not a Mazda2. Instead, the Accent offers a combination of poise and comfort.

Safety Information
Although not at the top of its class, the 2012 Hyundai Accent fares well in crash tests. It won the IIHS overall top score of “Good” in all tests except side-impact tests in which it was rated as “Acceptable.” Notable features include six standard airbags, four-wheel disc brakes with brake assist, and active front head restraints. If safety is a primary concern, look to the award-winning Chevy Sonic.

Comfort & Cargo
Professional drivers are often won over by the Accent’s upscale looks and attractive ambiance. But for those of us not getting paid to flog the tachometer, practicality takes precedence over looks, however good they may be. The Hyundai Accent suffers from budget-conscious design, a dilemma common to many small cars. Touch points lack proper padding. There is a conspicuous lack of interior storage and only two cup holders. The center rear seat is narrow and firm. Rear visibility is poor. However, the Hyundai did manage to offer quantity if not quality. The sedan’s trunk is 13.7 cubic feet – a respectable cargo hold for a small car – and the rear seat offers over 33 inches of legroom. Courtesy of the high roofline, even six-footers should fit into any of the five seats.

Feature Highlights
Retired designers who once worked with the Russian Gulag must have created the base Accent GLS. It has no air conditioning, cruise control, power windows, power exterior mirrors, a CD player, or happiness. For $1,750, Hyundai adds the M/T Comfort Package, which adds all the above as well as a six-speaker audio system with a USB/iPod interface and satellite radio. When equipped with the automatic transmission, which requires the Comfort Package, the GLS is eligible for the $1,300 A/T Premium Package. It switches out the 14-inch steel wheels for 16-inch alloy wheels and adds keyless entry, Bluetooth, steering wheel-mounted controls, and more. The Ford Fiesta has superior options, however.

Tidbit Trio:
1. A few drivers complain about a dead on-center steering feel.
2. A tire pressure monitoring system and electronic stability control, both of which are included on the 2012 Hyundai Accent sedan, are required by law on new vehicles sold in the U.S.
3. Though marketed as a subcompact, the Accent is classified by the EPA as a compact car.

Now that the Accent has overcome its weak engine and lackluster design, it should make a great fit for drivers seeking a practical, economical car. And Hyundai – and you – can now live happily ever after.
