Hennessey Upgrade for Camaro ZL1 Boosts HP to 1,021

by Auto News on June 15, 2012

Hennessey Performance is offering special tuner kits for the 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1, boosting performance to an incredible 1,021 horsepower at 6,400 rpm.

The HPE1000 Twin Turbo upgrade includes a new LSX engine, upgraded fuel injectors, forged low compression pistons, forged steel connecting rods, electronic boost controller, dual wastegates, stainless steel exhaust system, and air-to-air intercooler. Hennessey exterior badging is also included as well as a few style upgrades to the interior.

The upgrade also includes a centerforce dual friction clutch, requiring owners to be able to drive with a manual transmission. Due to strict emissions requirements, the upgraded Camaro ZL1 is not legal in the state of California.

Despite its appeal, the HPE1000 Twin Turbo upgrade is too much muscle for even some of the most die-hard auto enthusiasts. This is why Hennessey has announced other, more mild tuner kits available for the Camaro ZL1. The HPE650 kit provides 658 horsepower while the HPE700 kit boosts numbers up to 707 horsepower. With the HPE800 kit, the Camaro ZL1 can achieve 800 horsepower.

The 2012 Camaro ZL1 starts with a basic 6.2-liter V8, producing 580 horsepower and 556 lb-ft of torque.

Nice to see a 427 engine in a Camaro. No time out yet but the 650 HP did 0 60 in 3.7, so I can’t wait to see what this one does!
